Today’s Tip – getting up to temperature

Make sure everything is at optimum temperature before you give it 100% on track. Obvious things like making sure your engine and gearbox oil is at the correct temp to minimise risk of damage or failure is important but also things like tyres need to be in their operating window.

On cold pre-season test days it can take longer to get temperature into the tyres so, once you have checked it is clear around you, start heavy acceleration and braking to generate core temp from the brakes and wheels and surface temp by inducing small slides in the corners. Once you feel the tyre ‘switch on’ its grip you can then start leaning on it harder and pushing for lap times.
